‘mindfulness …means allowing oneself to be there in the very moment of what is happening in the living process – and then letting go’
Chögyam Trungpa
Mindfulness based approaches use ancient awareness practices to form the ground of an 8 week course that is designed to help participants learn to relate differently to what is challenging them. The difficulties may be general ones that affect us all – or they may be specific such as dealing with cancer, or having a history of depression. By learning to practice mindfulness, we can gradually become more open and gentle – developing the capacity to turn towards what is difficult and open to it, rather than turn away and avoid it. This takes practice, intention and courage.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR) was created over 20 years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has developed out of MBSR and cognitive therapy through the work of Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale (2002).
Trish has taught MBCT to cancer and haematology patients for the North West Wales Cancer Service in the Alaw oncology Unit since 2000. It is hoped to extend this service eventually to all cancer centres in North Wales.
Trish also teaches for the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (CMRP) at Bangor University on:-
• MA/Msc in Mindfulness Based Approaches
• Teacher Training Development (TDR)
• Distance Learning Course
• Supervision of teachers
• Other courses – such as ‘Being with the Difficult ‘with John Teasdale
